Nice job ripping off Edward Gorey’s style.

yeah, cause no artist ever learned from or admired another in the history of art. It’s similar….just like Monet and Renoir influenced Cezanne who in turn inspired Pablo Picasso and George Braque….it’s the evolution of art.

Wouldn’t it be nice if someone said “Nice tribute to Edward Gorey’s style” instead?

I like how the creatures appear to be scared by the human in several of these.
Gorey-esque, yes, but that’s not a bad thing. Very cool.

There is being inspired by something…
Then there’s ripping it off.
It looks good, but yeah…Edward Gorey.

For him to “rip off” Edward Gorey, he’d have to know who said person is, which, if he just draws in his spare time, I see no reason as to why he should. Maybe I’m just stupid, but I’ve no idea of who Edward Gorey is.
Being a Dane myself, I don’t think you’re specifically taught about any Edward Gorey in our education system as is now, possibly with the exception of art studies. I obviously went out and checked out who Edward Gorey was after this, and honestly? I don’t think they’re that alike. Edward Gorey’s work isnt as… Polished isn’t the right word, but I’ll use it anyway. It’s more… Rough, somehow. And not exactly a style I’d recognize, as said way of drawing isn’t really special.
I know people who draw in a smiliar style, so.
If you’re speaking of the motives, then I suppose I see the similiarities, but again, these motives aren’t really all that original, nor are Edward Gorey’s from what I saw.
Just because his art is similar, it doesn’t mean he’s ‘ripping off’ somebodies style. It’s not as if he’s selling it commercially, is it? Everybody gets inspiration from somewhere. I’d personally love to try art like this.

I agree, if this work was published as a tribute to Gorey then I could appreciate it. The theme and line work, especially in the first image, are too much like Gorey to not be (too much) influenced by him.

Moan, moan, moan.. bitch, bitch.. whinge, whinge whinge… boo hoo!! so the guy likes to draw and put it online, if all you haters above can do better then go ahead.. No? What’s wrong? Many of the above comments smack of petty jelousy… soooo soo sad.

Come on, that’s like saying Batman ripped off Superman because they’re both comic superheroes. These two are in the same category but certainly not a rip-off. And you only know Edward Gorey because of The Gashlycrumb Tinies, or maaaybe The Doubtful Guest, so don’t pretend to have studied his body of work enough to scream rip-off.

His style reminds me more of Maurice Sendak than Edward Gorey. Especially with his monsters. Most excellent monsterage, I must say!
Regardless of whether he was inspired by Sendak or Gorey or no one at all, no one lives in a vacuum and there are dozens of original artists who have similar styles. Hardly anyone is really, truly, completely original without being derivative. “Peep” is a douche who needs to get over himself.

@Catherine
– that’s because the 5th one is so obviously a rip-off the Forest Spirit character in Princess Mononoke.

I promptly googled Edward Gorey after glancing at the comments. I didn’t look too in depth but really this style is very prominent. Not only is it like Gorey, but Burton, and hundreds of other goth/emo inspired artists. That’s not where I was going with this. I just wanted to say that I prefer Kenn to Gorey. Not because he is oh-so-original, just because I like it.

Keep at it Don Kenn. Gorey came from his place and time; you’ll come from your own. I like your work.

All criticisms are plagiarized by the very notion of disrespect. don’t like it: dont post it. the very fact that you HAVE studied art means that you are, or on your way to being, a failed artist. individuality and creation are destroyed by the “light” of history.

Wonderful stuff. I quite like the style, it’s very interesting.
On a side note…
@ Phaedrus: I disagree with the comment about art being studied ruining the artist. You can draw original content whilst being inspired by historical or modern artists– ask anyone who has a degree in the arts. Education without copying never hurts.

This are great work, really engrossing and impressive hatching and depth, especially in so small a place (all on post-its, yes?).
The argument about Gorey is pretty silly. Gorey’s work is much more staid and formalised, and with much less flambouyant. The only real similarity is that they create macabre images in greys and blacks. That’s hardly an unusual colour pallette for the subject matter is it?
If someone’s claiming to be a true original, and hasn’t done they’re studied research on past work, or contemporaries, then they can justifiably be called on it. I don’t see that that has happened here.
@scottish, Alex and Jenna: You’re right about the whinging moaning and jealous know-it-all snobs on here, who should man-up and post their own work for critique.

Reminds me of The Gentlemen from Joss Whedons Buffy episode “Hush”
Yes, there is the influence of Edward Gorey here, and of Studio Ghibli, and also of cartoonists like Tom Gauld (google him).
Remember, though, that artists, particularly younger artists, take inspiration from those around them, and there’s nothing wrong with that.
Secondly, remember that this guy DREW THESE PICTURES ON POST-ITS AND PUT THEM ONLINE TO BE ENJOYED FOR FREE. Get off his case, you impotently angry people.
Hi nice drawings!
Are you intrested in having them as postcards on my site?:

I think this style is similar to Gorey, but the figures in these drawings inspire more fear and exhibit a sense of monumentality compared to Gorey’s drawings.
