Known for his strong and sensuous depictions of women, Brian M. Viveros is a master of contemporary iconography paying homage to the femme fatale. While he almost exclusively paints portraits, within the expressions of his women is conveyed such deep emotion and overwhelming sexuality that his work is undeniably erotic. Often
without even a hint of nudity, the viewer is seduced with a mere pout and gaze from his subject’s faces. Although carrying on a long tradition of the alluring female in art, his work differs from Pin-Up style images of the past. Aside from the absence of figurative representation, the commanding subjects in his art contrast “Cheesecake” ideology of the soft and innocent. Instead, with her empowered stare, the Viveros smoking bad-girls flaunt battle scars, tattoos, and army paraphernalia. A force to be reckoned with, she is the epitome of a subculture heralding a new era with shifting ideals.

This underlying concept of grit combined with sensuality is brought forth in his execution and paint handling, as flesh rendered with an almost touchable suppleness is juxtaposed by paint splatters and brushstrokes. With explosive compositions and an unmistakable style, Viveros creates 20th century representations of both beauty and
culture.

Brian’s paintings have appeared in museums and galleries throughout the world, and featured by media including Juxtapoz, Tattoo Society, Hi Fructose, Skin Two, TLC’s LA Ink and more. In 2005 Viveros made his directing debut with his short “Dislandia”, and he has since created the full length feature “Southern” and other films, which have premiered internationally and have been featured on networks including The Sundance Channel.

In what will be Brian’s second showing at the gallery, the opening will feature an all new collection of original paintings, as well as special rare prints from the artist’s own collection; poster giveaway and signing; live “Smoking Army” performance; screening of Brian’s films along with his new short, and much more.

About Last Rites Gallery:
Established in 2008, Last Rites has become a premiere gallery for the Dark Art movement and a haven for artists who prefer to explore the ominous, uncomfortable, and eccentric in their work. Striving to showcase some of the most thought-provoking art in contemporary surrealism, Last Rites creates an atmosphere where the artist can
harness limitless expression and the observer can reflect inward, inspired to understand that which resides in us all. Since it’s inception, media accolades now include Juxtapoz, Inked Magazine, Tattoo Society, Hi Fructose, NY Post, and the Channel 11 News.
Paul Booth, featured by Rolling Stone as “King of Rock Tattoos”, opened Last Rites after 20 years of contributions to the tattoo and art community. Networks including Discovery, TLC, MSNBC, and MTV, continue to share the Last Rites reputation with the world. The uniqueness of Last Rites, aside from its focus on such work, is the collaborative effort between founding director, Genevive Zacconi and Paul Booth. The fact that they are both accomplished artists as well, allows for a stronger relationship with the exhibited artists, and a more understanding and creative approach to the overall presentation of their work- enhancing the experience for everyone who visits Last
Rites Gallery.

Last Rites Gallery is located at 511 W 33rd Street, between 10th and 11th Avenues (3 blocks from Penn Station), 3rd floor, New York, NY 10011. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 2pm to 9pm, Sundays 2pm to 6pm. For more information, please visit:

An eerie netherworld, which is often touted as the world’s largest underwater sculpture park under construction, will be sited somewhere in the northern part of the Mexican state of Quintana Roo in late 2010 or early 2011. Dubbed as the National Marine Park of Isla Mujeres, the undersea museum will contain more than 400 sculptures when constructed as part of The Silent Evolution project.

You could see these sculptures showing stone people typing on a keyboard, lying asleep or riding a bike. Made from a special PH neutral and anti-corrosive concrete, the sculptures will eventually form artificial corals to support marine life. Accessible to snorkelers and scuba divers, the museum will attract tourists for sure.

Situated in the heart of Soweto, the Football Training Centre is the centre of football in South Africa, where 1200 teams and 20,000 footballers play each year. In less than 6 months, the facility was transformed into a state of the art football training centre – the first of it’s kind in Africa, and the rest of the world. Designed by the Canadian firm, RUFproject in conjunction with the Nike Global Football Brand Design, the facility encompasses 2 new full sized artificial pitches, 2 junior turf pitches, new lighting, a clubhouse & player lounge, an education facility for the Grass Roots Soccer & Life Skillz program, a Training Gym, Physio & First Aid facility, a Product Trial, Catering , Administrative Offices, Viewing Deck and new Change Rooms. The Clubhouse & Player’s Lounge house regular and in-depth tips and insights from Nike Athletes & Coaches and a place for coaches and players to focus on the tactical and strategic aspects of the game.

The concept was to create a clear but intricately woven relationship of spaces, linking the programmes of facility through visual connections created by cuts in the solid mass of the rectangular structure. Each room has views to and from other areas of the building which creates an intricate and selective transparency between functions. The facility has been design from the outset for and around the player, supporting the various aspects of their day. Everything has been considered to make the facility flow and remain open, and at the same time manage the reality of creating a secure and safe place to play football. The gym, product trial and catering functions have operable facades, opening them up to the field directly to the fields, and a player’s tunnel bisects the main building creating a direct connection from the change rooms with the field for the players.

The facade is clad in a local sandstone, and wrapped with a local timber louvre structure to mitigate the solar heat gain to the west, north and east facades. Cantilevering over the pitches, the overhang provides shade before and after the game. The south facade has it’s sandstone exposed and houses a growing list of players who distinguish themselves on and off the pitch – their names permanently apart of the building and it’s future.

The intent of the project was to provide a lasting home for football in the dynamic neighbourhood of Soweto that would continue on past the world cup.

It’s not a lie when someone says, “You never get too old to play with Lego.” It’s such a creative endeavor and there is no end to the possibilities of your builds. A huge theme throughout the years has been to legolize movies so that the kids can act out their own little adventures with their favorite movie characters. So far, Star Wars has been, by far, the most successful legolization. It seems there’s no limit to what can be built with Lego and I continuously come across elaborate and insane builds, each one more impressive than the next.

So far, there hasn’t been any campaigns focused on adults and maybe that’s because Lego still sees their little building block as a young person’s endeavor. However, there are probably as many adults playing with these wondrous blocks as kids, and they even build stuff as big as your average house.

There have; however, been some unofficial (or at least I think they are) Lego ads that you just wouldn’t believe. Some are crazy and creative, yet somewhat tasteless and disturbing. The weird thing is that no matter how tasteless and over the edge you might think they are, we still need to have a closer look at what this is really all about. Watching these pictures really puts Lego in another perspective. The censorship block look is really making the picture quite interesting and even though the girl isn’t built out of Lego, it’s still a neatly done effect that is nothing less than impressive.

It takes me back to the days of the Commodore 64 with its 8Bit graphics which resembles that of the block pieces in these pictures. It’s like taking an express train back to the 1980′s when everything built out of large pixels on a screen was pure wonder and inspiration. Say what you will about these pictures, but there is one fact we can’t disagree on… it’s insanely creative! And it caught your eye… didn’t it?

Tell us a bit more about you
After graduating with a BA in fashion design, I started my career in the fashion industry in design and development, illustrating in my spare time. After taking a break with year spent traveling the world, I’m now concentrating solely on illustration.

My style is predominantly vector and photography based using a combination of hand drawings, adobe illustrator & adobe photoshop. Previous clients include Puma, AMVBBDO, Tommy Hilfiger Denim, Neet & Minnette Shoes, Bright Multimedia and more recently Alexander McQueen Puma.

How to keep your creativity works?
If you mean how do I keep creative? Hard not too in London with so much inspiration around, galleries, museums, exhibitions, the internet is good but by no means the best. I try to have a sketchbook with me whenever I am out. I am quite into vintage dress-making pattern illustrations at the moment.

Favorite media?
Tend to use a combination or media, I have drawings and sketches all over my studio, I create a lot of vector art in Illustrator and love to colour and add texture in photoshop.

How to reach you?
All my contact details are on the site but my email is info@mattrichardsillustration.com

Your future plan?
Beginning of 2011, I am planning to get heavy on the marketing as apart from the website its something I rarely get time to do. I am also working on illustrating children’s book as a long term project so we will see where that ends up.
